Churches – Monasteries

Skopelos Island is one of the few places in the world where churches, chapels, and monasteries blend with nature and the unique identity of the villages to create a living piece of art. In Skopelos Chora alone, dozens of churches and chapels “live” alongside the locals while another five monasteries located in the town’s surrounding area are there to “keep it company”. There are hundreds of churches and nine monasteries of the post-Byzantine era scattered across the island, with their own story to “tell”. A significant number of them have impressive iconostases, dating back centuries.

The Monastery of the Annunciation (Evangelistria Monastery) of the Daponte family, the Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ (Metamorphosis Sotiros), St. Barbara Monastery (Agia Varvara), the Nunnery of St. John the Baptist (Ioannis o Prodromos), the Holy Monastery (Agia Moni), St. Eustace Monastery (Agios Efstathios), the Holy Archangels Monastery in Vatos (Agios Taxiarchis), St. John Monastery (Kotronaki) and the Monastery of the Holy Archangels (Taxiarchon) in Glossa offer a unique religious experience. Come to Skopelos and explore all of them!
