Four generations of Greek pottery-National Inventory of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO
The artistic tradition of Rodios family of potters begins with its founder Nikolaos Rodios. He was born in 1867 in Kythnos, and at the beginning of the twentieth century (1900) he settled in Skopelos, where he created an art studio that has been operating continuously ever since, for four generations.
The potter-artist innovated and created until his death in 1945. Afterward, his artistic knowledge of clay was inherited by his sons, Vasilis (1905-1986) and Giorgos (1909-2008) Rodios.
The highlight of his career was the patent (1930) for his antique black vessels, which stand out for their color treatment and excellent gloss.
His contribution to the art of ceramics was honored with the Gold Award at the Paris International Exhibition of Decorative Arts (1937).
Today, Nikos Rodios continues this tradition of over a century, which he learned alongside his father and uncle.
Next to him is the fourth generation, his daughter Magda Rodiou, who knows the alphabet of this unique relationship with clay and contributes her own style and ethos to her creations.
