Yiannis Boudalas belong to a family with a shipbuilding tradition. His grandparents had shipyards in America and the Black Sea.
His father, Triantafyllos, was a shipbuilder, and after the closing of the traditional shipyards of Skopelos, he applied his technical knowledge to build smaller-scale ships, becoming a pioneer in micro-shipbuilding. He taught the art of micro-shipbuilding to his son Yiannis, and the ship fitting to his daughter Nina.
Today Yiannis continues his family art, and teaches it to his daughter Rigina.
