In the region of Ambeliki, near the town of Skopelos, you will find the Monastery of the Life-giving Spring or the Virgin Mary Livadiotissa (“of the meadow”), epithets attributed to the Mother of God. This is a private, single-aisled basilica with a wooden roof. Valuable icons such as the wood-carved, late-Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary’s Dormition, are housed in the monastery. Equally impressive is the icon of the Virgin Mary as the Life-giving Spring, crafted by the famous Cretan hagiographer, Antonios Agorastos (1676).
