An island joke tells of a visitor asking which grocery sold “organic” produce, only to be told they all do. While many foodstuffs have to be imported, much produce is either island or regionally grown and seasonal. The island’s most famous crop is its rare local plum varieties, often found in unique island taverna dishes (its sun-dried plums are unique in Greece), almonds, citrus, legumes and kitchen staples grown by small farmers or on family kalives, small country house gardens.
